Zuffa's Johnny Fisher play is more revealing than the opponent
Fisher-Pirotton is not the hard part. What matters is whether Zuffa Boxing wants real boxing or just recognizable inventory with a broadcast logo.
Johnny Fisher makes his Zuffa Boxing debut Saturday in London against Michael Pirotton on Paramount+. The same show has Craig Richards vs Radivoje Kalajdzic, a light-heavyweight fight with more immediate divisional use than the headliner.
Fisher is popular and flawed: a ticket-selling domestic heavyweight who got stopped brutally by Dave Allen in July. That makes him a useful test case for Zuffa. Do they rebuild him honestly, or does the new boxing machine become the old boxing machine with UFC presentation?
If Richards-Kalajdzic is the best actual fight on the card, what does that say about Zuffa's early matchmaking priorities?
Zuffa's early boxing identity will be shaped by the fights it chooses when the logo alone is not enough.
