Teofimo got the belt. Now 147 wants a real answer

A majority decision over Rolly Romero was enough for history. It was not enough to make Lopez feel inevitable at welterweight.

What happened

Teofimo Lopez beat Rolando “Rolly” Romero by majority decision Saturday at T-Mobile Arena to win the WBA welterweight title and become a three-division champion. The Ring had Lopez ahead on two cards, 116-112 and 115-113, with a third judge at 114-114; the public punch layer had Lopez landing far more often.

Why it matters

The win puts Lopez directly into a welterweight belt picture with Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Liam Paro. That sounds glamorous. The film was less tidy: Romero hurt him in the fifth, Lopez had to reset under fire, and the cards were close enough to keep the audit alive. Lopez needed proof he could come back after Shakur Stevenson. He got that. He did not get a coronation.

Sharp question

Does Lopez turn the WBA belt into a serious unification path, or does 147 expose the same mood swings and spacing issues Shakur punished?

One Big Read · Analysis

“The belt is real. So is the audit.”

Lopez left Las Vegas with history and a target. At welterweight, the target may matter more: every big name near 147 now has a reason to believe the new champion can be reached.

Thread to carry forward

147 is now rich enough to become stupid.
